Getting Graphic with History: The Life and Times of Jimmy Brown

Take a journey with author Amy Hollander on April 11th at 7:30 PM to explore her recent graphic novel, Low Bridge, Everybody Down, which shares the real-life experiences of Jimmy Brown, a black canal boat captain on the Delaware and Lehigh Canal in the early 1900s. Learn how Hollander crafted the story by combining Jimmy's oral histories within the framework of local, regional, and national events, and how she interwove her narrative with the vibrant art of Will Rosado to create a dynamic interplay of word and image — one that will engage the next generation of young readers with the diverse history of the Delaware and Lehigh Canal system.

Speaker Bio:

Amy Hollander is a lifelong storyteller with 20 years of experience as an educator and a museum professional in the tri-state area. For years, Hollander has specialized in developing living history programming for local school districts. These programs introduced students to the lives and struggles of everyday people in history.

In 2017, Hollander established Cloud Mill LLC to help museums navigate 21st-century challenges. Hollander encourages community-forward planning in her projects and has a successful record of developing and delivering powerful exhibits and engaging programs that bring underserved narratives to the forefront. Currently, Amy is the Historic Resources Manager for the Parks and Recreation Department for the County of Bucks. In this capacity, she authors a blog, Bucks Bygone Byways, that highlights the lives of everyday people, places, and objects from the past.

Working on Jimmy Brown's life story has been an honor for the author. From the first listen of Jimmy's recorded memories. Hollander was captivated by both Jimmy's positive attitude, despite the trials he endured, and his determination to make a better life for himself against all odds.
